The Mirage was designed to be like a rainforest, yet a jungle with fire, and water.  With a cascading waterfall out in front that turns into a volcano at night, this hotel was for Siegfried and Roy.  Steve Wynn offered Siegfried and Roy a paradise home for their animals and a record breaking contract of 57.5 million dollars for five years.  They obviously took this opportunity but first took a world tour to Japan, Radio City Music Hall in New York and many other places for eight months.  Over a million people in Japan saw them and that was the inspiration to one of their illusions that they still do today.
During their time away, the Mirage was under construction.  At that time, it was the most expensive hotel ever built in Las Vegas with a price tag of $630 Million. It opened in December of 1989.
